Bottom line, I just plain don’t want to miss any of these memorable times with my great family!!

I suppose an even more important reason, is that out of our 42 years of marriage, we were only able to spend the holidays a handful of times with our families. And how I longed for that—every year. We tried to make up for it by having guests join us—which we loved, but nothing took the place of my mom and dad! And now that they are gone, it is even more important to me to spend the precious moments with those I love!

And now as I head for bed this Christmas Eve—pain killers in hand, I am filled with joy! I am a blessed woman. I get to spend Christmas with most of my kids and grandkids, and the rest of the gang will be in later in the week!! And even though I can barely walk, the excitement of seeing the grandkids tearing into their gifts with such reckless abandon is my most joyous thought! Christ is Born! Emmanuel!! I pray God’s blessings to you and your families this Christmas and in the New Year!

Reflections on

Indian Summer

I hope this isn't politically incorrect, but I can't help but remember this as a description of the hot, humid, summer like weather we always had in the fall back in the olden days in Kansas. As much as I love fall, I really love the hot weather we have in fall as well. It just helps me feel like it is still summer. Had a great day in Balboa Island today (I'm pretty sure I could live there!)--the sun was amazing, lunch delicious, ice cream even better, being with old friends--priceless! Thanks Rosie, Barbara, and my new friend, Betty. Can't wait to come for happy hour some summer/fall afternoon! I'll bring the box!!

Opps!!

I haven't written on this blog for so long, I forgot my password!! I love remembering her especially on this day. She was the most generous, loving, caring, hospitable, kind, thoughtful person I have ever known. And I still miss her terribly! Ironic she also died in April--the 18th.
My second joy is lilacs and the overwhelming scent they carry, and the wonderful childhood memories they evoke. I just returned from a trip to my hometown in Kansas and was able to pick some lilacs and inhale them several times a day. They are beautiful and scented--an unbeatable combination. I brought a few starts back with me in hopes of getting some going out here. We will see. Even if they start, it takes seven years to get flowers--what joy that will be!!
Joy three--Easter!! It's the entire reason for my faith!! I love celebrating with church services and family! We will color and hide eggs, and I will eat chocolate!!
The last but never least joy--Spring, the sunshine, the flowers, bird song, and everything that goes with it. Driving home, I was listening to Christian Radio, and the pastor was talking about some slick new church opening up near where he lived, and they had sent out brochures saying how they had the answer to success in life, and happiness, and a bunch of feel-good stuff. He said--that isn't real Biblical teaching--real Biblical teaching is this--" Life is hard, then you die and go to heaven!!" That helps put a lot of things in perspective!! The pain, the fear, the disappointments, the worries, the sadness, the loss, are just part of life in this fallen world. My worries and stress over the many things I thought were important, just need to take a hike!! All that matters is what is done for Him. Have a great rest of the week!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://goingtograndmashouse.blogspot.com/2011/01/stressed-let-it-go.html' title='Stressed? Instead, I am making some goals for the new year and my future. This is the first day of the rest of my life!! No looking back, just striving forward to God's purpose for me. Some events in my life are causing me considerable stress--but I know who is in control, so I refuse to worry and be stressed. At least on the outside. I'm still searching for that inner peace which can only come from God. I only know this much--God has plans for me, plans to prosper me, not to harm me, plans to give me a hope and a future!! How can I doubt, or feel stress about anything when I am convinced God is in control. I will have goals--only ones that align with the will of God. Then I will wait on Him, and receive what he has promised me! Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year--2011!!

I just about jumped out of my skin when the talking wolf attacked Edmond!! I'm in the middle of a Chronicles of Narnia marathon!! Just finished the first installment, complete with a sundry of delicious sweet treats--I'm in the process of becoming, as my college friends used to say, pasted shut!! And loving every minute of it. In fact, during the break, I will make some popcorn complete with real butter to go with my Coke! The next installment, Prince Caspian, awaits! A great way to bring in the new year--preparing myself for the new movie, Voyage of the Dawn Treader! Which I will see very soon!! Hope you too are having an amazing New Year's Eve--and my wish to you all is a Very Happy New Year, with many blessings to you and your families!! WooHoo!! A perfect California winter day!!
This has been a difficult year for many--us included. We are however, very thankful to still have our jobs! We feel very blessed! Lonnie is still with the Orange County Department of Ed. He completed the infamous Elk Hunt of 2010-at the top of his bucket list. Now however, he is hooked and wants to make it an annual event! He’s already busy planning next year’s hunts! He’ll never retire--has to work to pay for all his hunts! Lonnie celebrated his 45th class reunion last summer--boy those people are old!!
I am still sharing a contract in Tustin with daughter Sarah. We’ve had a tough year with a Kinder/First combo. We’re a third of the way finished--but who’s counting? Love the part time--don’t think I ever want to work full time again--after all, it’s almost retirement time, right? Then again, in this economy, do we ever really want to give up a perfectly good job? Especially part time? I didn’t get to travel much this year--Maybe next year! Lonnie did take me fly fishing in Colorado--it was an experience! I, unlike Lonnie, do not plan to make in an annual event! I do love Colorado-- but I don’t think we are moving there!
We have big news this year--two new grandsons!! Kembe came from Haiti in January to Mark and Kristen’s family, and Duzi came from South Africa to Michael and Jodie’s family!! We are very excited--we were all together for the first time at Thanksgiving. It was a happy reunion--the cousins (all 9 of them) had a blast!!
Michael and Jodie are still in Washington. They and their kids, Alex (10), Caleb (8), and Duzi (6) stay super busy with church (Overlake Christian), sports, and just living life!
Mark and Kristen are in Costa Mesa with their clan--Jafta (6 in a few days!), India (4), Kembe (4), and Karis (20 months). Mark is an MFT and Kristen teaches some classes at Vanguard University, and is writing an advice column for the OC Register. Jafta started Kindergarten this year and the two 4 year olds are in preschool. Again, busy life!
Sarah and Kipp moved to Mission Viejo this past fall--into our first home in California. It’s fun to see them in the house we lived in when Sarah was born! Kipp is still with the city of Aliso Viejo, and Sarah sharing a teaching contract with me. Tanner (3 ½) and Peyton, (22 months) love their nice yard. Tanner is in preschool this year and loving it. They also stay quite busy!
Other news this year is we have found a great church home. We are so blessed every Sunday with great teaching and wonderful loving people!! I have even joined the Christmas choir--with two rehearsals only--very different from the Viva-type choir from my past!! But I love singing praises to our awesome Lord!!
A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Let Me Entertain You!!

I am struggling to get some exercise in each day, and have decided to walk on the treadmill in the garage to old movies I have purchased at various yard sales. (Let me just say, I will not be walking in the garage when it is 108 degrees, like it is today!) So, yesterday morning, I watched my second installment of My Fair Lady. If you have never seen the movie--Rex Harrison, and one of my favorites, Audrey Hepburn, you don't know what you are missing!! The story--amazing! The music--incredible!! Just pure, unadulterated entertainment!! A movie from an era where you actually went home feeling good about life after seeing the movie!! A far cry from many of today's movies which seem to focus on the evil, the crime, the hate, and the fear in life. I guess that's why you will find me at all the movies like Toy Story, Up, Mama Mia, High School Musical, Alpha and Omega, and the Legend of the Guardians. I want to be entertained, I want to laugh, cry and identify with characters who are fun and enjoy life!! I want to, no need to, feel good about my movies!!

Country pleasures!!

When we first moved to our current location, about 7 years ago, I glibly remarked that this was probably the closest to the country we would ever live. We back up to a big canyon and see the Cleveland National Forest across the canyon--above a few houses. Very quiet and nice!
Recently, however, I am beginning to believe we do indeed live in the country. Why do I say that, you may ask? Well, it started a few weeks ago while I was working in the garage after dark--after it cooled down a little. I stepped inside for a few minutes, and when I came back to the garage, a huge (it had to have been at least 50 pounds or more!) raccoon went scooting out of the garage! We had never seen raccoons up here before.
Then last night, some friends stopped by, and as they were coming in the front door, a bird flew in. We spent the next 20-30 minutes trying to get it out!! Crazy!
Then tonight, I came in to work on the computer and I started smelling some serious skunk smell. And the window wasn't even open. I went to see if Lonnie was noticing it--and as I walked down the hall, it smelled like the skunk was in the house. We raced around closing all the windows and turned on the fans to try to get the smell out of here!! Seriously, my eyes are still burning. I have never smelled skunk so strong! I think a family of them has taken up residence in my yard. I was afraid to walk out there tonight--super crazy!
So I guess I am saying, even though I live in the middle of a very populated area, it seems I really do live in the country!! Now if I just had a red barn--I've always wanted one of those things!!

New School Year!!

I'm doing some serious vegging after our first 3 days of school. I swear the state and the districts are trying to kill teachers--what have we ever done to them? My heart goes out to all my teacher friends who, like us, are beginning our adventures this year with anywhere from 30-38 students in their classes, not enough desks, or text books, and even higher expectations than last year. Yet--we are thankful to have jobs, and just want to do the best for this little charges of ours! Lord help us!! Give us energy, patience while training these little ones (Kinder and First Grade for us), and lots of creativity to manage these large numbers! (35 for us!) Our last night was spent in a nice hotel on the outskirts of Winslow, Arizona, made famous by the Eagles' song Take it Easy. So early the next morning, we decided to take a little time and visit the little town that made it all happen, and even the little corner, where it happened!
The first few blocks down Main Street were downright depressing. Abandoned motels (which could be fixed up really cute, I might add!), run down houses, empty churches, sleazy bars and restaurants--it was all there. Then, I saw a change as we approached "the corner". After parking, we walked toward the "corner" and observed other tourists taking pictures of the sculpture of the cowboy on the corner, backed by a huge mural that covered the side of a building. A gigantic route 66 sign had been painted in the middle of the intersection. Two darling gift/sundries shops were on two of the corners. A restored hotel was down the street.
Of course, we shopped. Lonnie bought an Eagles poster from a concert long, long ago. In fact so long ago, the price for the concert was listed at $15!!. We also bought a 2 CD set of the best of the Eagles. Which we promptly started reading about and playing on the remainder of the trip! Brought back so many memories, their songs were really great--even poetic! While drinking my "venti" sized cup of hot tea, I wrote a few lines of poetry of my own:

I won't last long
with this much tea.
I won't last long
with out a pee!

And down the highway we sped--eager to get home!! Or to the next rest stop!

Vacation Entry--Day 6

We finally got on the road this morning (actually noon) after a delightful breakfast on the patio at Uncle Bob and Aunt Jody's. Before we left, they introduced us to their Wii Fit plus. I think we will have to get one! I never laughed so hard in my life. Especially when Lonnie tried the bird one using Uncle Bob's statistics--He about wore himself out and couldn't get that bird off the ground!! Looks like a fun way to get in shape--and boy do we need that!!

Our drive has been great so far. We drove through some "toad stranglers" as we crossed New Mexico and part of Arizona. (Serious rain storms for those of you from California!) And even this evening, we are surrounded by a beautiful lightening show. God's amazing handiwork!! We still have 8 hours or so before we get home. Can't wait! We will see the kids on Sunday!! It's been a great trip. Lonnie and I are still friends!! I got tons of shopping done for school. We saw the most beautiful scenery and storm clouds. We hung out with family and friends. Even went trout fishing!! As good as it was, I am very excited to get home!! Just like Dorothy--there is no place like home!!

Vacation Entry--Day 5

As I begin this post, I am reminded of travel journals my son Michael wrote, and the subsequent book that he published, Miles to Cross. Great reading!! Let me assure you, there will be no book as a result of these mindless drivilings. Just a way for me to remember the trip!!

Again, it is not really day five, just post 5! I've had no internet access since Sunday. As some of you may have read on my facebook, we had a very interesting evening at a bar in Enid--part of Lonnie's reunion tour!! Had a fun day of shopping on Saturday--I always find the neatest things when shopping in Oklahoma or Kansas. We had fun at the reunion that night--dancing and being silly!! One of my favorite things!! Sunday, we drove down to Edmond, Ok. for a reunion of sorts--several of Lonnie's cousins, nephews, and other family members were there. We had a great time seeing everyone again! And ate some delicious steak!! Thanks Darrell!!

Monday, more shopping and more goodies to pack in the car!! Yikes, if I buy anything else, I will be carrying it on my lap all the way home!! Tuesday, we drove north to my hometown in Kansas. As we were driving, the temperature kept rising--from a mere 103 in Edmond to a high of 114 in Kansas. We met my 97 year old uncle and other friends for dinner--so nice to see everyone!! Stayed with our lifelong friend, Pearl--she is such a sweetheart to open her home to us at the last minute!!

Wednesday morning we woke up early and went out to our storage unit and went through some things of Lonnie's from Boy Scout stuff, to old girlfriend photos, and other high school friend photos--a walk down memory lane for him. I will give him credit--he got rid of most of the stuff (and I use that term loosely!) He went from two foot lockers full, to 6 small shoeboxes. (Don't even ask where the shoe boxes came from--see first paragraph!)

Then we started driving south/west toward Lubbock, Texas home of Lonnie's aunt and uncle--amazing people!! Lonnie got to play golf with his uncle. Then we went to a great Soup Plantation type restaurant for lunch. Now we're playing on the computers. Tomorrow we start home--dread the drive, but can't wait to get home and see my little grand kids!! Then Wednesday, I take off again for Kansas for a week!! Yay!! More shopping!!

Vacation Entry--Day 4

It's not really day four--I've been out of reach for a day or so. To update you, we saw no bears at the High Country Lodge. I consider that very good news. So after a great rest in the woods, we met our guide Scott for our adventure up the mountain to some fantastic streams. I truly have never seen such beautiful scenery. And the streams--amazing!! I loved being in the streams--of course walking on those boulders is not exactly easy--thankfully I had Scott holding my hand!! How did I do, you may ask? I did catch the first fish of the day. I also caught the smallest fish ever caught out of these streams. Scott took a picture for his web page!! And he told me I was like job security for him. So what do you think?

After our fishing adventure, we travelled up the hill and across Wolf Creek Pass to a tiny little town called, Creede. Absolutely adorable!! We stayed at a darling B&B called Blessings Inn. If you ever go up there check it out!! We ate at the Antlers Lodge, right on the river. Saw lots of fish and a deer while eating!! A beautiful and relaxing town!

Then Thursday, we started our trek to Oklahoma and arrived here at 10:00 last night. We are staying at Cherokee Lodge, a nice place on the Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Lonnie's hometown. We are here for his class reunion. So, at this moment, I am all caught up on our laundry, and ready to hit the town of Enid!! Lonnie's sister, Kay will be joining us this afternoon--can't wait!! More to come!

Vacation Entry--Day 3

Today we said goodbye to Aztec, NM, and our new friend Laurie. We left her with both toilets stopped up and sewage backing up into the tubs. She may never speak to us again!! She kindly assured us it was not our fault. She may never speak to us again!!

We arrived in Pagosa Springs around noon today. This is another beautiful town. We looked at some vacation/retirement houses today and fell in love with a couple of them!! The best thing about this place in addition to the beauty, is the lifestyle--so laid back. So very different from California! I dropped my phone by the car when the realtor dropped me off--an hour later she calls me on Lonnie's phone and brings it to me. So sweet. We're staying in a great lodge--complete with bear warnings!! We're going fishing again tomorrow--this time wading the creeks. Should be fun. Stay tuned!!

Vacation Entry--Day 2

Okay, I was a little too hard on our guide, Corky. He was very patient with a beginner grandma!! I even caught the first fish!! And several more to boot!! I hooked the biggest fish, but unfortunately, it jumped right off the hook while we were trying to land him!! Bummer!! All in all, a very good day!! And the scenery was beautiful!! I will add some pictures when I figure out how!! It was hot and it didn't rain--no hypothermia!! It felt very good to get a large iced tea and cool off.

Now I'm all showered up and ready for the evening. We are going to a chinese restaurant tonight with the gal we are staying with. It's a bed and breakfast without the breakfast. And we have become friends with the homeowner and are having a wonderful time!! If you are ever coming out the Aztec, New Mexico or Durango, Colorado, give her a call!!

Tomorrow is now up in the air--I don't think our guide wants to guide us again!! I have to say I sort of like it--since it "never rains in California"! Tomorrow we are going fly fishing. My biggest concern is getting soaked while out on the boat and dying of hypothermia!! Our guide, (young and cocky) assured me that he could row the boat back to shore in 45 minutes from anywhere on the lake. And how long does it take to die of hypothermia again? I don't feel very assured personally!! I will put that out of my mind and go as prepared as I can for the possible weather changes!!

That aside, Lonnie and I have only had one "knock down, drag out" conversation so far in three days, so I guess that's a good start. We're not really used to the 24/7 lifestyle!! And only one desperation call from my sister. Funny how her emergencies always come up when I am on vacation. And then, the friends who are staying in our home called to say the electrical outlets in the kitchen and bathrooms are going out!! Fantastic!! I'm feeling so relaxed already!! And it's only 10:00 a.m.!! Actually makes packing quite easy!! One rain jacket, and the rest hot weather clothes!! Whoopee--Summer in the midwest!! (One thing the weather channel doesn't mention--the humidity will choke us!! Yikes!!) There is no clothing appropriate for the humidity/heat combination!! I am very blessed, it is true. But it seems 33 of those days have already gone. And the question is Where? It's true I spent 3 days camping at the beach, a week long road trip with Sarah and kids to Boise, had amazing house guests from Tennessee for a week--such a fun time!!

So, now that I have actually counted it all out (that is of course, including weekend days!), I will start tomorrow taking some positive action. There are now 38 days left of my summer vacation. That's positive, right? Starting Friday, I will spend the better part of 16 days in the car on a road trip. We will be trout fishing in Colorado, looking at retirement property, going to Lonnie's high school reunion, visiting family and friends in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. And doing a lot of driving. It's a good thing, right?--no tv, unwanted phone calls, and I'm really looking forward to it! I've got my music lined up, my snack list prepared, our stops planned, and I'm mostly packed. That leaves 22 days. Later in August, my sister and I will be flying to Kansas (again?) for "her" vacation. (8 more days gone)

Now I'm down to 14 days!! No, not enough! I can't get everything in that I want to do! I want to go to the beach, clean out all my closets, go to lunch with numerous friends, play with my grandkids, read at least 10 more books, have a few BBQs at my house, and do a lot more relaxing! I haven't seen any of the new summer movies--Toy Story 3, etc. All I can say is, I'm going to very busy spending up these 14 days!! I don't see much sleep in the near future!! It's worth it--I love my summer!!

It's Spring--and I'm uplifted!!

It's been a great weekend--first of all, fantastic weather--sorry to all of you who had snow on the first day of spring--so sad!! But we played and played--outside!! Now, sadly, I am getting ready for tomorrow--two solid days of teaching and parent conferences. But then, Wednesday I fly to Kansas--there had better not be snow when I get there!! I'm expecting some spring weather!! So get it together!! (As you can tell, I am a fan of the multiple exclamation marks!!) I choose to be excited about the small stuff--after all, it's all small stuff!! I am probably about as dorky as they come!! At least according to certain members of my family--me and my matching clothes! Woohoo!! I know I am rambling, but unlike other Sunday nights, I feel fantastic!! Church was very inspirational--in fact some serious tears were shed as I was duly convicted and challenged. Lonnie grilled some steaks--that along with a delicious salad and my favorite veggie, broccoli, topped off a wonderful Sunday dinner. Lonnie even cleared the table. So what is my problem? If I knew, maybe I could do something about it. I just feel low, sad, lonely, depressed, even a little angry--need I go on? Those words alone make me feel even worse. Who ever said it is good to talk about your problems? I think I am in serious need of some girlfriend time--my life just isn't cutting it right now. Maybe another part of that is I'm not sure I even have any girlfriends. I've not been very good at cultivating my friendships these past few years. Anyone up for some girl time fun? Call me!

New Picture Needed!!

We have a new grandson!! and consequently, we need a new photo for my blog! For those of you who didn't know, Mark and Kristen have been trying to adopt a little boy from Haiti for over 2 years. When Kristen was visiting him in Haiti two weeks ago, the 7.0 earthquake hit causing much devastation, and fear on our part regarding their safety. We finally heard she was safe and all the children in the orphanage were safe, but it was not a good place for any of them. Four days later, Kristen and Karis came home, but without Kembert. After hundreds of phone calls and letters to congressmen, last Friday, Kembert came to the US. Mark met him in Florida and they flew to California the next day. A large group of friends and family members met them at LAX--what a joyous reunion. And now he is home. Learning about his new family, learning a new language, learning about new food, having new experiences, McDonald's, trampolines, a mom and dad, brothers and sisters, cultural experiences we probably aren't even aware of. What a blessing to us all. I am very excited to get to know the newest member of our precious family--can't wait for some very special grandma hugs, and times together. Thank you God, for yet another little person to love and share life with.

Retirement Job!!

I've always said I couldn't retire until I found my retirement job/passion. Well, I found it today. I have always wanted to live on a farm. I have no idea why, I know it is 12 months of 24/7 hard work. I must have some glorified version in my head of what being on a farm is like, horses, bunnies, goats, gathering eggs--and yet, my intellect tells me STOP!! Today, I (and Sarah) took our little Kinder friends to the Centenniel Farm at the Orange County Fairgrounds. And there, I found my future volunteer employment--a docent at the farm. One who takes small groups of children around the farm, explaining and teaching their little hearts out for one hour or so, then telling the kids goodbye, and being finished!! No grade cards, no parent conferences, (I do enjoy meeting the parents, however), no hours of planning--but of course, the bad part--no paycheck. So I guess I'll stay where I am for a while longer anyway. I do like money. Besides, there is something about developing relationships with the kids. Falling in love with them, and seeing their amazing growth over the 10 months we have them. Today, I loved looking into the eyes of the kids while we sang rousing renditions of Old MacDonald, Itsy, Bitsy Spider and countless other classics, and seeing their utter joy. Yes, I am exactly where I am supposed to be. At least for now.

Fall at Last!

True, the leaves haven't starting changing colors--most won't. We watched Wall-E with two of our grandkids and their mom and dad in a beautiful park under the stars. Who knew that would be so delightful. It brought back memories of the family drive-in nights our family used to love. My mom would pop a bushel basket full of popcorn--with butter! Also, since we didn't have an ice maker, she would wrap two ice cube trays with newspaper, and bring cups and cokes for our drinks. We never went to the concession stand--we always brought our own treats. The main difference was tonight we were wrapped up in blankets before the movie was over. Summer nights back in Kansas were steamy hot--but no less fun and memorable! I don't remember one single specific movie I watched in those years, but the feeling of family was undeniable. Memories don't get any better!! Save your money moms and dads--your kids will remember nights like tonight forever!!

Ants

Yes, I am well aware of the awesomeness of ants. They are tireless workers, extremely industrious. And I know they can lift and carry something like 100 times their body weight. And they are even somewhat cute when you look at them up close. But, the truth is, I hate them!! In the heat we have been experiencing here in Southern California, they have literally taken over my kitchen. Since I am anti-poison, I tried everything--water, vinegar, Windex, you name it, to deter their assult on my home. I finally resorted to Raid when they covered my entire kitchen counter. I let it stand for 24 hours to hopefully send the word out--"Keep out of this house!" The next evening, as I was wiping up the bodies, I opened one of my pantry doors to see swarms of them--it was like they were in Disneyland! It was late, I was tired, I shut the door and told them to eat all they want--I would be back tomorrow. Well, it's now three days later. I have still not taken everything out of my pantry and killed the little critters. They are still swarming--even though they don't seem to be eating anything. And there seem to be a little fewer of them today. Believe it or not, I am learning to like the little guys. The good news is, it has cooled off somewhat--it's only in the 90's and down in the 60's at night. I feel strongly that they will begin their pilgrimage out of my pantry tonight. If not, tomorrow is truly "D" day--and that stands for DEATH!! Consider yourselves forewarned!!

Summer Vacation--Nearing It's End

We are enjoying a few days in Seattle visiting our son Michael and his wonderful family. It has been cool here unlike Southern California where we have been burning!! Today, it even rained--delightful!! It has been so fun--staying up late, reading, sleeping late, taking great walks in the trails that surround their house, eating decadent cupcakes, taking the kids to movies, eating delicious farm grown vegetables, drinking hot tea, just spending time with the grandkids--all in all, an amazing time. In a way I am dreading going home on Wednesday. That is when the countdown begins for going back to work. And I have tons to do before I go back to work. And I am not ready to leave my summer!! Please don't let it end just yet!!

Cuteness abounds!

How could I not mention the latest group photo of the "magnificent seven"--seriously, could there possibly ever be a cuter group of kids? For the past month, I have had an excuse, I have no internet. The good news about that is, we are going wireless--sometime in the next month anyway. And I am getting a new computer for me--a laptop, and we are getting a new desktop as well. A great time to go wireless-no? yes? For the time being, I am at the library. I had to come and do my online banking and get a confirmation for our trip to Seattle next week. Thank goodness for the public library--thank you, wasn't it, Ben Franklin? Whomever--thanks. So much has happened since my last post--for one, Sarah and I are moving to Kindergarten next year. And we are so happy about that. Also, we are on summer break--which is the number three reason I love teaching. Number one is the kids, the job itself and working with Sarah, number two is the money, little though it is, and third, the lovely, long summer. I went to my class reunion in June--that will be another post. We just returned from a road trip to Kansas and Oklahoma--that's another post too. This week, I am driving to San Deigo to stay in a timeshare--by myself--I can't wait!! Lonnie will join me for the weekend. I see some serious reading by the pool in my near future. And lots of Mexican food--my favorite, and Lonnie doesn't really care for it. Plus some long walks, and maybe even a workout or two in the gym, assuming they have one. Maybe I'll just settle for the lounge chair by the pool and a nice cool drink!! Tata for now!

I'm Back!!

Don't ask me where I have been, because the answer is nowhere!! I just seem to be avoiding the computer as of late. Too much fun with the grandkids!! I've loved this Spring Break--I am feeling more and more like I will love retirement--whenever that may happen!! After living in So. Cal for 30 plus years, I visited the flower fields in Carlsbad last week. So beautiful!! Again, where have I been for 30 years? Good Friday was absolutely amazing at MVCC--you all outdid yourselves!! And Easter Sunday as well. Then we spent a fun afternoon at Mark and Kristen's house with the local family--hiding Easter Eggs and eating like there was no tomorrow. Yum!! Today, I have chosen to stay home and get some things done before I go back to work tomorrow. For one, I will walk today!! The sun is shining--there is no excuse!! It doesn't take much for me to cancel--too windy, too cold, too much pollen, too wet, no time, a better offer, and the list goes on!! I'm not really looking forward to going to work--although, once I get there, I really do enjoy it--the kids especially. For now, I'm off to walk.

Progress?

My dear husband was "hell-bent" (pardon the expression) to get his new car (2008, but new to us) into the garage. We have lived in this house for 6 years, and have a nice 3-car garage. Never have we had two cars in said garage. When we first moved in, we spent a small fortune getting an epoxy floor and really nice built ins in the garage--thinking we could get rid of our storage unit--and thus save money. Great ideas. Only one small problem--we are the king and queen of crap. So for the last 5 years, I have managed to squeeze my VW bug into the 3 car garage. Things were looking pretty good out there until Christmas. I dug out all our decorations, and then after Christmas, but them back into the garage. Many of the items were too heavy for me to put back up--plus it's been darn cold here this January and February. Needless to say, things never got put away. It's deep out there.

So Monday night, hubby gets home early and starts working in the garage. He puts up what he has room for, and moves the rest of the "c" over to the 3rd car side, just stacking it higher and higher. It is now stacked taller than me! And I'm 5'9"!! And the cars are parked practically touching--making it tough for both of us, who are a "few" pounds overweight, to get in and out of the cars. Plus, I have bags--school and lunch. Such a pain. Also, I have to squeeze out of the car to see if I've pulled up far enough, then squeeze back in to pull up a few more inches in order to get the garage door closed! Tonight, in his attempt to give me a little more room, he pulled in sort of sideways. So I could get out of my car a little easier--with my bags. Then when I tried to get into the house, I noticed the path was completely gone. I had to go around to the front door to get in my house from the garage--and then forgot to go back out and close the garage door. Later this evening, when he wanted to go get a drink out of the garage refrigerator, he had to go out the front door and into the garage.

Saturday, we have a date to work on the pile on the last side of the garage. I guess this is progress! Just so this stuff doesn't end up in my house!!

Making the Good Choice!

I had a meltdown today driving (or should I say racing) to get to my chorale group in time to pass out the costumes I had ordered and sorted, and packaged for the new members of the group so they would have them in time for pictures next Tuesday. Whew--even saying it exhausts me. But through it all, I came to a good conclusion. I may have to either cut back or even (I can't believe I'm saying this) drop out of chorale until this school year is over. Let's face it--I would rather spend time with my grandchildren, relaxed time, than feel so stressed about being in places and groups that really don't matter in the grand scheme of things. And what in the world was I thinking when I said I would be in charge of costumes this semester? I need to practice that little word again--NO!--before I get myself in even more trouble. I think the worst of it is over--I may have to place another order before the performance in May--notice I didn't say my performance!! I have come to grips that I might not even be singing then!! There is enough stress in my life that I can't control--I need to eliminate what I can!! Good job, Nancy! Tomorrow I get to spend the day and the night (Yay, a sleep-over!!) with Tanner and Peyton. Now that's pretty bad. And I have no real excuse--just the usual. Working, enjoying my family, taking care of my sister, trying to get ahead in my house (impossible, I've decided), and the other things that seem to creep into the days. Now as you may have heard, I have another new grandbaby--Peyton Elizabeth, born to Sarah and Kipp on Friday. She's a beauty!! Big brother really loves her too. As soon as I learn to put pics up, I'll include some. For now check out Lyonslove and Kristen's blog for some cute ones!! This is number 6 for us and number 7 will be born in April!! Who knew being a grandma could be so wonderful--and so much easier than being mom!! I'm off today to spend the night to help Sarah take both kids to the dr. tomorrow!! What fun!! I never want to go back to work!!

Back to Reality!!

I just finished my "week" of work today--my three day week!! And as much as I dreaded going back to work after the two week break, it was a delightful time with the students!! We have a fantastic class--very loving kids. There's something about work, I don't know if it is the structure, the feeling of worth, the actual job, the children, the fellow staff members--it's just a very good part of my life these days. As the economy gets tighter, I feel like I will never quit work. On the other hand, if there are more and more cutbacks in the state budget, things may happen that are out of my control. (As if anything is really in my control!!) I really like my job and the money too!! I really don't want to lose my job!! But, rather than worry about that, I will continue to just enjoy each day I have in our little classroom, with our little first graders.

Happy New Year!!

Last night was quiet for us. We had Jafta and India over to spend the night so mommy and daddy could celebrate both Kristen's birthday and New Year's Eve. We watched Wally in front of the fireplace in our jammies. A great night!! Today, however, the kids were up at 6:00--still on Florida time!! We've been playing, reading, and they are now watching Rudolph with grandpa. I have been trying for the last 30 minutes to begin paying my bills on line (one of my New Year's Resolutions)--and a big step for this barely computer literate grandma. And of course, it is not letting me sign up--no wonder I get discouraged!! I guess I will wait til tomorrow and try to call someone. I will not write checks today!! I will win at this game!! I've made coffee and guess I had better go relieve grandpa--maybe it's time for breakfast! The gas logs are "crackling" in the fireplace, the Christmas lights are all lighted, the traditional sticky bun pull-apart has been consumed, the gifts have been opened--we are all in a somewhat vegetative mode--and loving it!! Janet (my sister) and I are in our new comfy slippers while we decide what movie to see. Lonnie is talking to old hunting buddies from Kansas and reminicing about the past. I miss the excitement and craziness of the grandkids--that was yesterday! But at the same time I am enjoying the quiet, soft Christmas music playing in the background. My prayer for you all is a peaceful day, filled with the love of family, good food, warmth, and most of all the knowledge of the greatest gift ever--the arrival of a tiny baby boy in a stable in Bethlehem 2008 years ago. A baby that would change our world forever! Happy Birthday, Jesus!! And Merry Christmas to each and every one of you!!

Make a Joyful Noise!!

Wow! I can't believe I haven't written since November!! What on earth have I been doing? Something I didn't know how much I loved and had missed--singing!! No, I'm not a fantastic singer, I don't do solos, I don't even take voice lessons. I'm just a choir singer. For years I sang in my church choir--often wondering what I would ever do without it!!
Well I've been without it for several--like 10 years now. It was a process--first I was in school 2 nights a week for about 5 years getting my clear credential and my Masters. Then my parents moved to California--and that took up much of my so called free time, even though I loved having them here.
Also during that time, my church was in transition. Our fantastic choir director moved back east. A couple of substitutes just didn't cut it. Then the church seemed to follow the way of so many with the worship team concept.
Anyway, this fall, I "happened" upon a Barbershop Class which "happened" to meet at a time that was convenient with work and all. After the first day, I was so excited, that I joined the Chorale group as well. So now, two days a week, I race from work to these classes.
These past few weeks, we have been having extra rehersals for our performances. We did the Vivaldi "Gloria" last Tuesday with an orchestra. It was amazing. I had forgotten how much I loved classical music! Then Monday night, we participated in a "Messiah" sing-along with this same orchestra--again, such a blessing!! Now tomorrow we have our dress rehersal for Saturday's performance of the "Holiday Hits Concert". Because it is community choir, we are doing several Jewish pieces, secular holiday songs, as well as several religious pieces. My whole family is coming!! I do believe I have rediscovered my personal passion.
Also, I truly believe God has placed me in these groups--I have made friends with several older women--I absolutely love them--and they me! Even one little man has stolen my heart--he is all bent over and walks with a cane--just like my Dad did. Thank you Lord for bringing me new love into my life--when I thought I couldn't be more fulfilled!!

Thankful!!

I am so very thankful this very minute!! We had a great video clip in church today that reminded us that we need to be thankful we have a God that is good, a God that will help us through the tough times, a God who is always with us. We need to be thankful in spite of the circumstances we may find ourselves in--and we will all have tough times--even if not right now. We have received more blessings that we will ever know. Right now, I am thankful I will have all my kids together on Thanksgiving--and our table will be full of delicious food!! Outrageously un-Christ-like things have been done to our elders--my husband included. We have been members of this church for 30+ years. Our kids grew up there, these people were and are our friends, we have all been taught and nurtured there. My heart is broken over and over, and I am angry. How can this happen in a place where we all have the same focus--to lift up the name of Christ. Part of me wants to lash out, to jump on the email bandwagon, to join the many who are leaving the church. And yet I wait. And I pray--for the strength to forgive those who have wronged my husband and friends, for peace to be restored in the midst of chaos, and for grace to abound. It's our only hope. God help us.

Fall is here!!

At last!! The sky is cloudy, the air is cool. And I am loving it!! Tomorrow we, Sarah, Kipp, Tanner and I are walking a 5k in Tustin for the school district foundation. It is supposed to rain and be 63 degrees!! And I was complaining about the heat!! I hope my feet will work tomorrow--today, they are taking a rest. Between my foot problems and being on my feet last night at our Halloween event at church for 6 1/2 hours, they are loving a little break. Tonight, I think I'll make some soup!! Yuck!! Where did our fall go? Seriously, I'm so sick of summer weather! I know I'll be sorry for complaining some time soon--when it gets down to 50!! Poor me!! To make matters even worse, the wind is blowing 30-50 MPH and kicking up so much stuff, that my allergies are a mess. Oh well. I do love living in California, but this weather is getting me down--sunshine every day, no rain, hot days and warm nights! Boring!! I really do hope to see some fall trees and beautiful leaves before too long. Maybe a trip to Seattle!!

Adult Fun--and the Consequences!

I just spent the last 45 minutes or so reading emails, blogs, writing emails, and catching up with my amazing family. Don't ask me where the rest of the week has gone. I have no idea. I was laying in bed this morning and realized I had forgotten my foot doctor appointment yesterday and my foot is killing me--it is much worse than before I had my surgery in March 2007. Course maybe that is because I spent 14 hours on my feet at Disneyland and California Adventure on Thursday!! What a blast! My sister in law and her cousin from Oklahoma were here and I couldn't resist!! I don't know if I have ever been with just adults--we had such a great time--screamed our heads off on the rollercoasters. Plus Sarah and Kipp bought Grandma Lyons and I tickets to the California Adventure Halloween event that night--so much fun!! So apparently I am still recovering from all that. Today, I did a lot of vegging--felt great!! Even the foot feels a little better. I think I will make it!!

When will I ever learn?

God continues to teach us--sometimes I think I must be a slow learner! God spoke to me today in church (I'm still waiting for the audible!)--just what I needed to hear. God is looking for believers who will worship Him. When we sing praises to Him, our problems will seem smaller--and they somehow do today!! It's a miracle!! A friend also reminded me of a favorite verse of mine, James 1:2-4 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." We still don't have a car, the window is still broken, (and yes, it rained yesterday!) my foot still hurts, etc., etc. But praise God--He is still in control and cares about my future! It also doesn't help that our government seems to be going down the tubes, Lonnie and I are sharing my VW bug convertible with no hope of getting another car anytime soon, my carpet is disgusting and I can't get anyone to help me move the furniture so I can clean it with my Kirby, I have a big stack of bills to pay, my sister wants to move back to Kansas after I've killed myself trying to help her get settled here in Orange County for the past year and 4 months, I'm starving to death--trying to be on a toxin cleanse diet, I haven't lost any weight to speak of, my foot is still bothering me a lot after 7 weeks of physical therapy, I am missing my choral groups I just joined because of the car situation, I don't even know how we will get to church tomorrow with the tiny car and 3 large adults (none of whom comes close to fitting into the tiny back seat), and speaking of tiny, the tiny back window of my tiny car (our only car) is now broken in the down position with a chance of rain this weekend!!
Is Mama Mia playing anywhere?

Believe it or not?

First of all, I must announce that I am just about the most unpolitical person that I know. But I try not to be completely uninformed. I was just reading the commentary section of last Sunday's paper--yes I'm always a little behind the time!! As a read Peggy Noonan's comments on Sarah Palin, I was reminded of what I always try to keep in mind when I read anything political or anything about a person in politics. Everything written will now and forever smack of the bias, beliefs, background and experience of the writer. My mother always told me--"Don't believe everything you read!" I believe this is true more now than ever because so much more is being written. Don't get too wrapped up in what you read--it's just someone's opinion--God only, knows the truth and the true hearts and minds of people--even those in the spotlight. Same with things going on in the world--political books are simply written by someone with a strong belief (bias) in a particular philosophy. I'm not suggesting we stop reading--just be careful what you believe. There is one Truth--no questions about it's validity--and it's still a number one best seller!! Those are words you can believe--and we already know the ending!! Read on!!

9/11

Today is a time for remembering. America was attacked for the first time since Pearl Harbor. Our generation was shocked and saddened by the attack--much like my parents generation was shocked and saddened by Pearl Harbor. Yet December 7 is just another day to us here in 2008. I am not particularly a history buff, but these events need to be committed to memory and remembering. America is and probably always has been vulnerable. One more reason to live each day to the fullest--no looking back in fear, but trusting in God for today. My husband spent 26 years in the Marine Corps--defending this great nation of ours and the freedoms we enjoy. Today was especially hard for him--it needs to be hard for us all. We are very blessed to live in this country. Since we are leaving Wednesday after work for Oklahoma and Lonnie's family reunion, and tomorrow I have three appointments and our small group meeting, I had today and today only to get ready for the trip. That of course included laundry, packing, paying bills, cleaning up the house (mostly picking up!), and loading the car. Yes we are driving a friend's car to Oklahoma and then flying back on Sunday evening. While I am at it, I am having Lonnie help me move some furniture which has been sitting in the hall for much too long--I figure, I'm laboring, he might as well too!! My real Labor Day vacation will be next weekend, sitting on the deck of the lodge overlooking the lake, sipping cool drinks, and reconnecting with family--with no real responsibilities. Can't wait!!

Just do it!!

I know I am a little behind the times--during summer, I don't read the paper, watch the news or do anything to keep up--I'm on vacation!! But I just read the article about Dave Freeman, the co-author of "100 Things to do before you die". He fell at his home and hit his head--he died at the age of 47. And sadly, he had only done about half of the things in his book! Life is indeed short--shorter for some than for others. The problem is, we don't know!

That said--I am developing a Carpe Deim attitude toward life. There was a time when my son Mark was a big proponent of Carpe Deim--he even got me to read Tony Campolo's book--which I highly recommend if you haven't read it!! He, that is Mark, lived life to the fullest--and still does!! Well, it's time mom did too!! So here goes. . . . . .

First, I am taking a line dancing class and a Tai Chi class. I am also taking a quilting class with my sister so we can make some cool stuff. This week I started a barbershop quartet style choral class and a classical choral class. Finally, I am signing up for an Italian for travelers class in preparation for my trip to Italy next summer. I'm especially excited about the choral classes--I've been in mourning for the past 6 or 8 years since my church choir disappeared. I'm not a soloist type singer--but am definitely a choir type singer--or to quote Mama Mia, a back up singer!! (I wish!!) If you happened to read one of my past blogs about not ever seeming to get anything done, I figure it couldn't get much worse if I add a few things to my life!! Especially things I love!!

Today, I begin living life to the fullest!! I just saw Mama Mia (the movie) for the 4th time!! It is without doubt the most upbeat, light-hearted, fun-loving, and entertaining movie I have seen in a long time!! And of course part of it might also be it is so about my generation and those wonderful 60's!! Not that I did anything like that at all--but the music--loved it!! And I was somewhat of a "dancing queen" if I do say so myself!! Also, Meryl Streep is my new role model--she is just amazing--and my age as well!! Something to strive for--I know she was carefully made up and touched up--I'm not totally unrealistic!! But loved her!! And Pierce Bronson--can't really sing--but who cares!! I also bought the sound track on the way home--however after 4 times I know most of the songs by heart!! It was just what I needed--again!

Keep it Simple!

As I have become more interested in blogging and especially reading other people's blogs, I have begun to evaluate my particular writing style. I have come to the conclusion that it is definitely first grade. What I mean by that is, first grade level. Comes from teaching Kindergarteners, First Graders and Second Graders the writing process for the past 11 years. We even use color coding to help students get the idea (not so much for Kindergarten, but definitely for 1st and 2nd). For example we use Green for the topic sentence. Then Yellow for the details, and finally Red for the conclusion. It is quite effective for the students and apparently for me too!! Now that I have First Grade writing mastered, I will use this blog to practice moving upward in my writing level--maybe even to Second or beyond!!

Summer Vacation?

Supposedly, one of the main benefits of teaching is the summers off. Well, it is July 22, and I'm still wondering when my vacation starts? I supposed it is all relative, because at least I'm not getting up at 6:00a.m. and driving to work. But the word vacation used to conjure up an idea of some form of relaxation, laying on the beach, little drinks with umbrellas and pineapples, getting a massage, hanging out with people you love. I do get the priviledge of being with people I love often, but it always seems to be associated with some form of busyness. For example, yesterday I had an eye appointment which lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes--what a waste of a perfectly good morning! The good news is my eyes are very healthy--the bad news is my new glasses are bifocals!! After that I met up with Sarah and Tanner. We had a fun lunch at In and Out, and then proceeded to make the errand run--4 different stops--exhausting for us all. We did top off the day with a fun picnic at the Beach Club with grandchildren and their cousins from Florida--maybe just a taste of that summer vacation I remember!!

Just One More Thing. . . . .

"Why do bad things happen to good people?" has become a burning question in my life as of late. I have a sister, Janet, for those of you who don't know, who has many issues--the first of which are developmental disabilities (borderline--she is very high functioning) and mental illness--bipolar, depression, anxiety, obsessive/compulsive, and dependent personality disorder. As if that is not enough, last May, the quiet little town in Kansas she lived in, was 90% destroyed by a tornado. She had no place to go since her apartment was also destroyed, so we (Sarah, two month old Tanner, and I) drove to Kansas to pick her up. We are her only relatives, with the exception of a few cousins and a 96 year old uncle. After the long drive out here, we settled her in a nice little apartment here in Rancho Santa Margarita. Now we have spent the last year struggling with Social Security, Medicare, CalOptima, etc, etc, until I can't see straight! (I did mention in my last blog that I am the worst at paperwork?)
Certainly moving to Southern California is not the worst of things that could happen to a person! There is more. I failed to mention, September 2006, Janet fell and shattered her left elbow, had to have three surgeries in 4 weeks, and spent a long period in a cast--during which time she was staying in a nursing facility which she hated, and some one there wasn't paying attention. As a result, her fingers became frozen around her cast and are now at least 75% useless. She is also being treated for osteoporosis, high cholesterol, and a thyroid condition. Amidst the hassle of finding doctors in our area who will take her insurance, we did see my internist who wants her to go to a neurologist to be evaluated for Parkinson's.
When she arrived here, she was a basket case, (who wouldn't be?) with surviving a class F5 tornado and losing not only most of your possessions, but your entire way of life. We began seeing my counselor to help her with the transition and the grief process. She recommended we look into College Hospital. We got her placed in their day program which involves group therapy. After 6 or 7 months, her case manager decided the program really wasn't what Janet needed. She suggested we apply for Regional Center. After hours of paperwork and a drive to Santa Ana for an intake interview, I'm sure you guessed it--she was denied services. So now Janet is attending a Senior Day Care Program 3 days a week--which she also hates. I continue to look for other options, one dead end after another.
The last straw came last Monday. About a month ago, Janet's glasses broke--they were several years old. Well, Monday, we finally went to the eye doctor. The bad news--she has lost most of the vision in her right eye due to a ruptured blood vein. There is nothing that can be done for it. Thankfully, CalOptima will pay for her new glasses--which will take at least three weeks! My heart just breaks for her--so many things seem to keep happening to her. We do what we can to provide a nice home and things to do--we include her in most of what we do. But seriously, God forgive me, I can't help but ask, why?

Too busy to Blog?

Is it possible I'm losing interest in blogging already? After all, it has been a month. Or is it just that my life is an absolute chaotic blur? But then I ask myself, "How can that be? I only work part time, I have no kids at home, I don't do lunch with friends, I don't even have many friends, I don't watch TV, I don't cook to speak of, I don't exercise. What the heck am I doing with my life?"
I have been doing some reading--I'm finally allowing myself to do that--now that I'm in Bible Study again. I used to tell myself, I won't read for pleasure if I can't even find time to read the Bible. So now I am free to read, and of course when that happens, two or three hours go by in the blink of an eye!
It is the end of the year at work--which means tons of paperwork--my least favorite part of teaching, report cards, meetings, cleaning up the classroom--and my fantastic partner (Sarah) helps with all that. So once again, what is my problem?
I did move my sister to a different apartment on Saturday and part of Sunday. I'm still recovering from that! And I had lots of help!
Could it be I'm not as young as I used to be? I have apparently been fooling myself. Just the other day, some woman (no friend of mine, mind you!) asked me if I was Janet's mother. (My sister is two years younger--granted she has NO gray hair, but please!) That is the second or third time that has happened in the past couple of months. And then my little first graders wrote me birthday cards and suggested in their little notes that my age might be anywhere from 45 (those are my favorite students!) to 100!! Crap! That's it--I'm old!! Dang--I was hoping that wouldn't hit till I was at least 75 or 80!! I'd best get off my duff and start exercising!! Thank goodness Tuesday is the last day of school--no more excuses!! Maybe I'll even take a Yoga class. I heard someone say it's the fountain of youth!! And maybe I'll get back on the wagon of eating healthy. I was going great guns for about a month--then things seemed to get too busy. How could eating right take so much time? Furthermore, I may even start blogging more--that seems to be a young person's pastime. You'll be hearing more from me right after I get back from spending the day at Disneyland tomorrow!!

Summer

June 1 is definitely summer to me!! In the midwest where I grew up, it was known as Decoration Day. We would go to the graves of close family members who had passed away and deliver fresh bouquets of flowers--mostly lilacs and roses from the yard. For us, it was my brother's grave, and a couple of cousins who had also died as children. It was hard as a child myself to go to the grave of another child. But I knew it was important to my parents, so I went willingly. Now my parents are buried next to my brother, Jackie, and I don't miss an opportunity to visit their graves with flowers. Now, however, I use the long lasting silks that are available--they are beautiful and other than slight fading, they stay nice for several months.
Other memories of the day are more upbeat--as the first holiday of summer, it meant just one thing!! Picnic in the park!! My mom would spend hours making homemade potato salad, (mashed), orange jello with grated carrots and pineapple, baked beans, fried chicken, pickled beets, and cake for dessert--sometimes even strawberry shortcake! All from scratch!! My Auntie Faye, Uncle Jess and cousin Sandy would meet us in the park with even more food! We kids would play for hours on the swings and slides in the park--and then eat this amazing meal--at the time not really appreciating it's goodness!! Now, when I attempt to duplicate even part of this meal, I am reminded of the time cooking from scratch takes. Just this Memorial Day, I made my mom's famous mashed potato salad--it took about 3 hours!! The baked beans go together quickly--thanks to Van Camps Pork and Beans--is there any other way to make baked beans? And fried chicken--forget it!! If I want fried chicken, it's KFC to the rescue. This year, Mark grilled some delicious chicken on his grill!! And once again, we ate an amazing meal--surrounded by the laughter of small children as they played the day away!

Here You Go Kristen

Five things on my to-do list today
1. So you can appreciate my delight in the amazing storm we had yesterday. I was in my classroom--the sky had darkened, a flash of light hit my face--and then it happened--THUNDER!! Huge, rolling, crashing thunder! I was revelling in it--reliving my childhood memories of sitting on the front porch swing, watching the rain pouring down, even wading in the flooded street during the storm--when suddenly I was jolted back to reality with two of my little friends bawling their eyes out in fear! Needless to say, I have little patience with anyone who doesn't love thunderstorms--but, I put on my teacher hat and explained about thunder and lightning (after all we are in the middle of a science unit about weather!) and how the rain is so needed by our gardens and flowers. We even moved our barrel of flowers out from under the awning so they could drink of heavens waters. The day was complete as I walked four little ones under my unbrella over to the day care room--wading ankle deep with them in the streams of run off!! I do love thunderstorms!!

Going Green?

I have always been somewhat green. My mom was recycling before there was even a name for it. And I grew up having "paper drives" at the elementary schools for fund raisers. But maybe I only thought I was green. After watching Oprah's Earth Day special, I decided to buy the book she was talking about that day--Georgeously Green. I had already made a feeble attempt to begin composting--I told Lonnie all I wanted for Mother's Day was a compost bin from Lowes. In the meantime, I am collecting it in an old trash can. (I noticed today some black liquid seeping out of the bottom of the can--that can't be good?) Oh well, back to the book--I do want to be educated!! So 8 simple steps to an earth friendly life--how hard could it be? If Sophie and Julia Roberts can do it--so can I!! Chapter 1--becoming aware--no problem, I'm fully aware. Chapter 2 Green Goddess. Apparently I am poisioning myself on a daily basis with all the products I slather on my hair and body. And I do mean poison--cancer causing and hormone altering poison, pages of lists of poison, none of which I can even pronounce! After instructions to literally throw out all my "products" and check out the umteen dozen websites where I can purchase green products for myself, (and I can assure you, Target or Walmart are not on the list of where to go) I am ready to throw out the book instead! Maybe I'll just stick to composting for now--it's not that hard to save garbage and paper!!

Happy Mother's Day

It's Sunday evening of Mother's Day. I'm always a little nervous about Mother's Day. Just 4 years ago, my mother died on April 18th. I think of her so often all year long--even more so in April (her birthday was April 21) and May. I am one of those very lucky people who was very close to her mother. She was a friend to me--but even more than that--she loved my children and I unconditionally. I know many of my friends have lost their mothers and share with me in a somewhat bittersweet Mother's Day.

But as I reflect on this day, I am so very thankful for the sweet part! I was able to be with Tanner in his Sunday School hour at church. Then we drove up to have lunch with Mark, Kristen, Jafta, and India at a great little Cuban restaurant in Newport (I think). Such fun!! When Mark was taking a picture of India and mommy, he said to her, "Say cheese, baby!" So with a big smile on her face, India replied, "Cheese, Baby!" We all cracked up to say the least! Such precious little pleasures and memories. Later today, we drove down to San Clemente and met Sarah, Kipp, Kipp's mom, Glenda, and Tanner at the beach for a KFC picnic. The sun was shining, it was warm, and Tanner had to get his feet wet. We saw dolphins and pelicans. As the sun went behind clouds, we bundled up in blankets--Tanner in his little bomber hat. I got to be with all my local kids today--and my Seattle kids last week. What a blessing!! Being a mom is such a gift--and now a grandma!! All that on top of having a most amazing mom of my own. Thank you Lord, for this beautiful Mother's Day!

Coming Home

It's always a little sad when I get home from visiting my northwest kids and grandkids. The visits are always amazingly fun, but they are so few and far between. I'm always so blessed by them--Alex is quite the Tae-Kwon-Do star, and Caleb is following in his dad's footsteps as a hustler on the baseball field--granted it is only T-Ball. Jodie is always the perfect hostess and I love attending church and hearing my son Preach!! Wow!! I sometimes still can't believe it! I love the great talks over coffee or a glass of wine by the fireplace. The weekend was topped off by the goats they "rented" to clear some of the vegetation overgrowth--what fun!! Check out Jodie's blog for pictures. Today, I am watching Tanner and having a quiet day--tomorrow back to work. In honor of the fun I had in Seattle, however, I brought some of the weather home with me--cold, cloudy, rainy. Ah California, home again!!
